The organisers of a pagan fair in Eastbourne plan to defy councillors and press ahead with the event.

The town's borough council refused permission for the Lammas Fayre to take place on Western Lawns on Saturday.

But the Eastbourne Pagan Circle said it would carry on regardless of the council's wishes.

It now plans to hold the event in the sunken gardens and moat area by the Wish Tower, next to Western Lawns.

Jerry Bird, whose shop The Green Man Book Shop and Gallery, sponsors the event, said: "It has been a bit last-minute because we do not want to cause a big fuss.

"There will be morris dancers there and there are several good musicians in the pagan circle. It will be mainly a folk festival."

The council said no permission had been granted to the pagan group.

Councillor Barbara Goodall said: "As far as Eastbourne Borough Council is concerned no permission has been given for a pagan festival on our seafront on that day, either at the Western Lawns or the Wish Tower or anywhere else."
