Meet Dennis, the dog no one wants because they think he's just too ugly.

Staff at an animal rescue charity have issued a plea to the public to find a new home for the six-year-old retired racing greyhound.

Gail Halls, of Allsorts Dog Rescue, who is looking after Dennis at her home in Hassocks, said: "Dennis retired from racing a year ago and we found him a home but the family's circumstances changed and he had to come back to us.

"Since then he just keeps being passed over. Lots of people have been to see him and they all say he is very nice but just too ugly. We have started calling him Poor Dennis."

Ms Halls said Dennis would make an ideal pet because he was docile, gentle, quiet and spent a lot of time sleeping.

She said: "He is well-trained and is good with chickens, horses, children and other dogs but he is just so ugly we are finding it impossible to find him a home.

"Greyhounds are normally quite graceful-looking animals but Dennis looks more like a goose. He is white with brindle patches and has a peculiar-looking head."

Ms Halls said the public appeal was her last hope of finding a home for Dennis, a retired racing dog.

She said: "He is a real clown of a dog, with great character but he is no oil painting.

"We just need to find somebody to love him."
