Dr Graham Mayhew was and still is a dedicated councillor for Lewes.

Behind his grandiose over-ambitious plans for an art gallery in the basement of Lewes Town Hall there were good intentions to make Lewes a leading arts centre.

There were those who believed he was acting too much as a one-man band during his tenure as town mayor of Lewes and town councillor as he sought to get funding for his scheme from National Lottery money.

Many of his critics were from his own Liberal Democrat party at the time.

Now, a report has revealed a catalogue of administrative and financial failings with some of his fellow councillors just as much at fault.

When he was sacked as mayor by his fellow Liberal Democrats and forced to resign from the town council, there were many in the town who felt the wrong person had been made a scapegoat and it was his fellow councillors who were at fault.

Some of his former colleagues should now admit they were wrong to treat a dedicated councillor the way they did.

Let us hope Dr Mayhew continues to speak up for Lewes as he continues as an independent district councillor and that his plans for Lewes are not treated as if he was trying make some personal financial killing from lottery funds when, basically, he had the interests of the historic town at heart.
