Police praised a man who saved a swimmer's life by dragging him back to shore from 50 yards out at sea.

James Jephcott, 33, from Brighton, sprang into action when he spotted a man face down in the water on Saturday afternoon.

He was joined by one of the drowning man's friends who started shouting for help.

When they lifted his head out of the water they discovered the man had stopped breathing and was foaming at the mouth.

Mr Jephcott pulled the man's lifeless body back to land.

He said: "When I got him back on the beach I pumped his chest to try and get some of the water out."

The man was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Sergeant Glenn Taylor said: "This man roused himself to get out there and save the bloke and I would say well done to him."
