An East Grinstead teacher has been named among the best in the South in a national award scheme.

Annette Stow was named the region's most outstanding new primary schoolteacher by The Guardian.

Annette, of Halsford Park School, received The Guardian Award as part of the annual Teaching Awards 2001 and won £2,000 for her school.

She will now go forward to the national final and could take her prize-money to £15,000.

Teacher Anne Jakins, of Sackville Community College, East Grinstead, was also honoured for the excellence of her special needs teaching.

She has been given £250 for her school.

The third Sussex winner was Lesley Corbett, of Carden Primary School, Brighton, who received the Leadership Trust Award for School Leadership.
