I was very impressed with Elizabeth Green's reply (Letters, July 14) to Eileen Nixon's letter on changing nurses' hours at Brighton General Hospital. This was one of the reasons I left nursing about five years ago.

I would bet money on Ms Nixon being one of those senior nurses who is keen to please and does everything for the consultant who wants to change the nurses' hours. There are too many people such as this in the NHS.

We want senior management to stick up for nurses, not ask patients about their hours. I read in the original letter that the nursing care could not be faulted. This is what Ms Nixon should concern herself with. When the care is not good, then involve the patients.

I am glad I left Brighton Health Care. It would seem nothing has changed. Like Ms Green, I would like to give Ms Nixon some advice: Do not let the consultant run your life. Gone are the days when nurses were the consultants' handmaidens.
