A motorist who got out of his car to help at the scene of an accident was struck by another vehicle as he walked along the road.

The 52-year-old Bognor man's knee was slightly hurt when he was struck by a van on the A24 between the Southwater roundabout and Buck Barn crossroads.

He had stopped to help after a Vauxhall Corsa overturned, blocking both lanes.

The Corsa driver, a 25-year-old woman from Brighton, was taken to Worthing Hospital with injuries said to be serious but not life threatening.

The first accident happened at 9.20pm and caused serious tailbacks, with up to 40 vehicles queuing between Southwater roundabout and the scene of the crash.

The injured pedestrian, the driver of an Opel Astra estate, was hit by a panel van as he walked back along the carriageway.

A police spokesman said: "The van appears to have come round a bend and tried to avoid the stationary vehicles and has caught this man on the legs. Luckily his injuries don't appear to be serious."

The van ended up in a ditch but the driver, a 31-year-old Henfield man, did not need hospital treatment.
