Andy Payne finished second in the Sussex 100-mile Championship, then cycled 80 miles home.

The fitness fanatic, from the GS Stella club, got round the course in 4hr. 15min.23sec behind winner Dave Shepherd.

But after a brief rest, Payne climbed back on his bike and cycled to Portslade while his wife, Dee, drove the car.

He said: "I need to build up my stamina for the Sussex 12-hour championship next month."

Shepherd (Rother Valley), who covered 483 miles when he won the National 24-hour Championship two years ago, was not troubled when winning at Upper Dicker in 4hr.7min.23sec .

Crawley's Steve Elms (In Gear), who won the East Sussex Championship on the same course last year, had an off day and failed to finish.

Boyd Johnson (Eastbourne Rovers) won the bronze medal in 4hr. 22min.5sec, while Brighton Mitre's Andy Green was 17 seconds slower.

Johnson led the Eastbourne club to victory in the team event.

He was backed by the 1998 Sussex champion Simon Prior (4hr.20min.3sec) and the club's amazing veteran Harry Featherstone (4hr.35min.27sec).

Featherstone, 68, said: "I can still make a nuisance of myself."

Mark Burgess (Lewes Wanderers) beat Tom Walker (unattached) and John Limpus (GS Stella) to win the main sprint event during the tenth track league meeting at Preston Park.

Another Lewes rider, Mark Winton, won a sprint race and the devil-take-the-hindmost and beat Limpus and Martin Penfold (Sussex Nomads) in the seven-lap race.

Bournemouth star Bryan Taylor and Brighton Mitre's Stuart Fahey lapped the field in the 35-lap circuit race at Hove Park.

Taylor then made a solo break with eight laps to go to finish a further half-lap ahead.

Fahey finished second and Tom White (VC Londres) placed third ahead of Alastair Stoddart (Catford) and Mitre's Andy Green.

Sussex ace Sean Yates (Team Clean) won the De Laune CC open 25-mile time trial in 53min. 28sec.

Roger Campbel (two lap), Barry Dunstan (four lap) and Paul Byford (six lap) were the winners at the Horsham Riders mountain bike races.
