A well known shoe shop in east Worthing is closing down after 38 years in business.

O'Donovans, in Ham Road, will cease trading on July 28 when owner Maureen Pipes retires just before her 60th birthday.

The shop was founded by Mrs Pipes' father, Timothy O'Donovan, in 1963. At that time the business employed five people, mostly in repairs.

Mrs Pipes - who was a bartender in Virginia, USA, for 16 years before returning to help her father - said High Street chains had hit trade in recent years.

She took over O'Donovans after her father's death in 1980 and lives above the shop.

Mrs Pipes said she was sad to close the business but was also looking forward to retirement and having some time to herself.

She said: "You can buy shoes so cheaply nowadays. People aren't having them repaired any more, which was the backbone of this business."
