Umer Rashid struck a splendid unbeaten 192 to enable Sussex 2nd XI to set Northamptonshire a formidable victory target in the championship match at Northampton.
Rashid rattled 22 fours and seven sixes in his fluent 251-ball innings as Sussex declared on 314-9 to leave Northants 422 to win.
Sussex are chasing their first championship win of the season in five attempts and this was another fine confidence boosting effort from the left-handed Rashid, who blasted 102 off just 118 balls for the seconds in a one day Trophy match against Essex last week.
Fast bowler Paul Havell, who took a season's best 5-44 in Northants first innings 170, quickly sent back openers Matthew Cassar (0) and David Painter (23) as the hosts reached 73-2 at the close.
Sussex, 48-3 overnight, quickly lost Robin Martin-Jenkins (15) caught in the gully off Cook before debutant Krishna Singh (60) joined Rashid in a fifth wicket stand of a 134.
