Jamie Carpenter struck his third half century in the last five innings to lead Sussex Seconds to their first victory of the season.

Sussex clinched their first one-day Trophy win in five attempts with a nine-wicket success over the MCC Young Professionals at Stirlands.

Carpenter's unbeaten 70 included eight fours and a six off 95 balls as Sussex, chasing a rain-revised target of 199 in 47 overs, stormed home with ten overs in hand.

The left-handed Carpenter gave Sussex a perfect start by sharing an opening stand of 111 with Dominic Clapp, who had reached 40 when he was caught behind off James Hudson.

Tim Ambrose then fired 52 at a run-a-ball with nine boundaries in an unbroken second wicket partnership of 88 with Carpenter.

Medium-pacer Tim Van Noort earlier took 3-34 from his ten overs as the Young Professionals posted 211-7 from their 50 overs after choosing to bat.

Alex Gidman (60) and skipper Mark Wright (40) pulled their side round from being 41-3 by sharing in a century stand before Richard Jackson (2-18) dismissed both batsmen in quick succession.

Van Noort, who struck first by having opener David Holt leg before for two, had Matt Beckett (22) caught behind and Mark Crease (2) holed out at mid on to give him his third victim.

Sussex, who had lost eight successive matches in all cricket before this win, are in action again in the Trophy next Wednesday when they play Essex at Wickford.
