Country rangers have for many years given help and advice to people roaming around the Downs outside Brighton and Hove.
Now the City Centre Business Forum plans to have a set of rangers in the heart of Brighton and Hove.
Their primary purpose would be to deter crime and to stop serial shoplifters who are taking millions of pounds each year out of the main shopping areas.
But the role of the rangers would be much wider than that.
They would also be able to give people directions, assist the disabled and report minor problems such as faulty paving stones.
It's a good idea which will help most visitors to the city centre feel confident that it a safe and pleasant place.
In other towns and cities, it has had the added advantage of providing jobs for people who have been long-term unemployed.
Provided the finance can be sorted out, these rangers will be a welcome addition to Brighton and Hove.
After full training, they will in the city seven days a week, offering security, help and first aid. They will be among its best ambassadors.
