Billy Smith will not be hounded out of Crawley despite calls for his head from the boo boys.

Reds overran their Worcester opponents last night in the Dr Martens Cup Final second leg but were found to be shy in front of goal.

They missed countless chances in a fruitless attempt to crawl back 4-0 deficit.

Smith said: "It's back to the drawing board. We have got to look at things in the summer and continue building for next season.

"We have not been good enough and struggled to handle pressure. Good teams can handle things when it gets hot.

"Supporters are entitled to their opinions but when it gets abusive they can not help anyone, especially not the players."

Skipper Luke Anderson, sent off in the opening game made some amends by firing Crawley ahead after a goalmouth scramble from 12 yards.

Worcester looked vulnerable and keeper Danny McDonnell made fine saves from Dean Wordsworth and Mark Hynes.

Reds continued to press after the interval. Wordsworth had a shot blocked and keeper McDonnell was caught in no man's land from a Keith Charman's cross, which was eventually cleared off the line.

Rookie striker Rob Collins missed a wonderful opportunity, rounding the keeper but shooting wide from an acute angle.

Wordsworth was brought down by the keeper. Bizarrely he did not even receive a booking, then saved Wordsworth's spot-kick.

Leroy Huggins missed an open goal, summing up Crawley's evening. They were clearly the better side on the night but scoring goals is the first problem Smith needs to address.

He said: "We murdered Folkestone on Tuesday and Worcester tonight. It doesn't take a genius to see what our main problem is."

Hastings Town slumped to an agonising defeat at home to Bashley in the Dr Martens eastern division.

Hastings had chances to get something out of the match but a 50th minute goal sealed their fate.

Steve Yates went close to firing Hastings in front early on but his vicious shot cannoned off the foot of the post.

Both teams had the opportunity to break the deadlock just before half time but Stuart Myall blazed over from six yards and at the other end Tony Kessell saved well from Craig Oliver.

Bashley grabbed the only goal soon after the restart when Darren Robson struck from 15 yards.
