Dave Wattam will lead Haywards Heath's final push for the double - despite skipper Henry Goodburn's return from injury.

Goodburn played his first full match of the season in last week's cliffhanger against Canterbury after recovering from a hand injury.

He got his chance on the wing when Mark Pymm suffered an ankle injury in training.

But he will not be taking over the captaincy from Wattam, who has stood in impressively during Goodburn's absence.

Instead, Goodburn will just be happy to be in the side for next Saturday's Sussex Trophy final with Lewes at Worthing (3.00) and hope to continue his remarkable try scoring record. Goodburn said: "Dave will be captain for the rest of the season because he has done the job so well.

"If it ain't broke don't fix it. I will be captain next year, but things are going so well we see no reason to change it for the rest of the season.

"I'm just glad to get back with the boys and get involved in a game like the one we had with Canterbury."

Heath did not confirm Goodburn's return until shortly before last week's summit meeting in London Two South.

Goodburn had virtually written this season off and admitted: "It was a shcok to get back in for a game like that but I felt so sorry for Pymmy, who has worked so hard.

"He would have relished that sort of game and playing in the cup final."

Instead it will be Goodburn out on the wing next Saturday, bidding to extend an amazing cup final record.

He has played in all five of Heath's successful finals, scoring a try every time.

Heath beat Worthing 45-17, helped by events between the 23rd and 25th minutes.

In that time, Heath scored their first try and Worthing had hooker Del Howard sent-off and lost skipper Mike Imrie injured.

Goodburn said: "They will be even more up for it than last year and probably more disciplined but we have just got to try and play our normal game."

Meanwhile, local television had to tear up the script at last week's Heath versus Canterbury showdown.

Meridian had been following Canterbury's build-up to the game and planning to do a feature on how they won the league.

Instead, they ended up interviewing successful Heath skipper Dave Wattam, after the game and sending Heath a video of the game, which proved most useful in training.

Quite who the other 'interview' team were, using a pastis bottle for a microphone, is anyone's guess.
