Celebrity couple Chris Evans and Billie Piper paid a low-key visit to Worthing on Saturday.

Onlookers said the couple seemed very much in love as they strolled arm in arm along the promenade.

They spent more than an hour in the spring sunshine at Ju Ju's cafe, near Splash Point, drinking tea and strawberry milkshakes.

The couple smiled and waved at a baby in a pram.

One man asked the Virgin Radio DJ and his pop star girlfriend for their autographs while a group of girls posed for a photograph with them.

Chris and Billie then walked towards the pier, stopping at Nina's Gift Shop on the way, where Chris bought Billie a giant plastic windmill.

Vivienne Sabia was working in the gift shop when the couple walked in.

She said: "They were in the shop for about five minutes looking around. They were nice, very friendly and very much a couple."

Her husband Donato, 51, later saw them walking along the seafront.

When they stopped to buy some fish he asked the couple for their autographs.

He said: "They had stopped to buy some Dover sole so I went up to them to say good morning and ask if they were having a good time in Worthing.

"They didn't mind giving me their autographs and we talked about the weather for a while and I gave them my best wishes.

"I rushed home to get my camera but when I came back they had gone."

Unshaven Chris was wearing a tatty blue hat and long black trench coat, while Billie wore a US army combat jacket and blue jeans with rips in the knees.

This is the second time Chris has taken a girlfriend to Worthing.

In 1999 he enjoyed a fried egg sandwich at Splash Point Cafe with a blonde companion.

Chris later plugged the town on his breakfast show, saying Worthing was wonderful.
