Give lottery money to the farmers (Opinion, March 28)?
With billions of pounds of taxpayers' money already poured into farming as compensation for BSE and now foot-and-mouth - money that should have rightly been spent on hospitals and schools - I, for one, would strongly object.
A better idea would be to put a 50 per cent levy on meat to help claw back some of the taxpayers' money, stop subsidies and, like all other businesses, make it a legal requirement for farmers to take out insurance against such problems instead of expecting the taxpayer to pick up the bill every time they get it wrong.
