After this community's stunning victory over Southern Water on the Portobello issue, the $64,000 question on everyone's lips is: "If not Portobello, where?"
The answer has to be Tarring Neville, north of Newhaven. Southern Water has already costed an inland treatment centre there at some £80 million and it could easily be linked to take the upgrading being planned for the waste water from Lewes and Newhaven.
Crucially, it would mean an end to dumping sewage at sea.
The treatment works there should be state of the art and a European leader. Organic waste to the highest standard could be produced and clean liquid run off to a watercourse.
The works could be screened, carefully landscaped and partially sunken. I intend to send a copy of this letter to the Secretary of State.
