Bereaved parents forced to confront their grief again in the NHS organ scandal have been invited to a remembrance service.

Hospitals throughout the country have admitted they took and stored organs taken from patients who had died without permission from their families.

The national scandal came to light earlier this year when it was discovered hundreds of organs had been taken from children at Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital for decades without permission.

Hospitals throughout the country also admitted they had taken organs from adults and children.

The distressing nature of the scandal caused grief for many people who had come to terms with the death of a child or relative, sometimes up to 20 or more years ago.

Mid Sussex NHS Trust, which runs the Princess Royal Hospital and Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre, both in Haywards Heath, set up helplines and received 85 calls from relatives concerned their loved ones may have been involved.

Sandra Tranter, head of midwifery services for the trust, is now organising a remembrance service for parents who called the helpline and whose grief has been brought to the surface once again by the issue.

The parents who have been invited to the service are not necessarily parents or relatives of the patients from whom organs were removed at the Sussex hospitals, but parents whose grief was renewed by the issue.

Madelaine St Clair, associate director for clinical governance for the trust, said: "We have contacted each of the parents who called the helpline and they have received a special invitation to the service."

She said the midwifery department organises a service each year for parents who have lost babies, either still-born or through miscarriages, but this year the trust also wanted to help parents whose grief may have been renewed by the revelations.

She said: "The issue brought it all back for many families, regardless of what the outcome has been.

"We don't want anyone to be out there worrying or grieving.

"They can still contact our helpline."

Hospital trusts are currently preparing a report into their involvement in the organ scandal which will be presented to the regional NHS office on Friday.

The date and venue for the remembrance service is yet to be confirmed. The helpline for anyone affected by the organ issue is 0800 1699642.
