It is almost impossible to go on even the shortest of journeys without coming across flowers on the roadside, taped to a tree or lamp post or laid on a kerbside or grassy bank.
The number of fatal accidents has reached terrifying proportions and become a part of everyday life.
Anyone who drives regularly will know why. Too much speed in the wrong places, taking chances when it is not safe and failing to leave a margin for error, hooligans on wheels and would-be Schumachers - all add up to accidents waiting to happen.
Speed cameras may frighten people into slowing down between camera positions but irresponsible drivers, who cause accidents, just speed up as soon as they get past them.
As 99 per cent of so-called accidents are caused by human error, perhaps all cars could be fitted with a screen on the dashboard on which a picture of a loved one would flash up automatically at regular intervals.
Even the wildest of wild ones might be brought to their senses with such a reminder of what (or whom) they stand to lose.
