Crawley boss Billy Smith was fuming after Reds lost to a 97th-minute winner at Burton Albion in the Premier Division.

Smith was incensed that referee Andy Woolmer played so much injury time in his side's 2-1 defeat.

Reds equalised early in the second half and looked to be heading for a well-earned draw against the title contenders when Christian Moore headed home.

Smith said: "The referee told the two managers he would be adding on five minutes for injuries.

"But when it came to it he added on eight and I confronted him about this afterwards.

"You get this sort of thing when you go up north and it was the same ref who awarded a penalty against us last season.

"This time we were unlucky because Luke Anderson should have had a penalty when he had his legs taken away from him.

"People up there said it was the best display by anyone against Burton all season.

"We produced a lot of good performances. Stewart Holmes marked their best player, Darren Stride, very well and Joe Gamble was superb.

"Our supporters were the loudest I've heard them all season."

Burton took the lead after 35 minutes when Marc Pullan headed into his own net, trying to clear a ball lifted in from a corner. Crawley levelled in the 49th minute when Burton goalkeeper Matt Duke misjudged a Dean Wordsworth corner, leaving Danny Carroll to head home.

A frantic second half saw Reds take the initiative, with Wordsworth, Anderson, Gamble, Mark Hynes and Dave Powell all going close.

At the other end, Pullen and Holmes made a series of interceptions.

Moore headed the winner from an Aaron Webster throw-in.

Meanwhile, Smith has re-signed former Reds defender Lee Doherty from Ryman League Grays Athletic, having released him at the beginning of this campaign.

New signing Gus Hurdle expects to make his first appearance in place of unavailable Nigel Brake for Reds' League Cup semi-final against King's Lynn at Broadfield stadium tomorrow.
