Shoreham and Worthing clubs are joining forces next Saturday to have a beach clean at Shoreham.

The clubs were egged into doing it by the Great Britain Tidy Group.

The anglers will be picking up rubbish for three hours starting at 9am but no-one has to do it for the full three hours.

Worthing secretary Stephen Montgomery would like to hear from anyone, and you don't have to be an angler, who would be interested in undertaking some work.

Montgomery said: "It is not anglers' rubbish but we are pleased to help clear up some of the mess.

The Shoreham clubhouse is near the Church of the Good Shepherd, next to the west car park on Shoreham beach. An old pair of gloves are advisable for picking up the rubbish.

Interested persons can contact Montgomery at 01273 462186 on evenings.

Third place in the sixth and final round of the Crawley Club's Winter Championship was good enough for Phil Harris to clinch the title.

Bricklayer Phil, from Tilgate, had a five point lead from Simon Clarke going into the last five hour session at New Pond in Parish Lane at Pease Pottage but Clarke, apart from hooking but losing a bream late in the match, had a fruitless time on feeder fished maggot.

Harris was content with his 1lb 12oz of roach taken on pole and maggot.

Crawley's competition secretary Lenny Wells moved up from fifth to take second place overall. He won the match fished in bitterly cold conditions.

After an hour hunting bream on the feeder while loose feeding hemp and maggot, Wells switched to the waggler on maggot and started to get roach. He had three nice ones around the 12oz mark in his total of 3lb 6oz.

Paul Shepherd got some action to be second on 2lb 7oz of mainly roach on the pole but with 30 minutes to go he was boosted by a rod bender bream.

Final top three: Harris 21pts, Wells 14, Clarke 12.
