I visited Brighton cemetery on Mothering Sunday with my four-year-old daughter and baby.
We had just walked down to the entrance on Lewes Road and found it locked and were making our way to the other entrance when a man on a bicycle rode past and told us that was locked too.
I had to rush to the Bear Road entrance, pushing both children on the buggy, hoping this would still be open. I found it locked as well.
With an extremely high wall to scale and a large drop on the other side, there was no way out and I didn't know what to do. Fortunately, two more people on bicycles arrived at the gate and helped us all climb over and pass the children (by now extremely distressed) over the wall.
I realised later I had not put my watch forward and so it was past closing time. Other people who found themselves locked in had done the same. But surely someone should have checked the cemetery to make sure nobody was there before locking the gates - especially as the clocks had gone forward that day.
I have since spoken to another cemetery manager, who told me this is standard practice. So why not in Brighton?
