Architects have started designing a Sussex research centre which will be the largest of its kind in the world.
The Freeman Centre is a joint venture between Brighton and Sussex Universities which will be devoted to research in science and technology policies.
London-based DEGW has been appointed to design the building on the Falmer site, which is expected to open in October next year.
About 200 science and technology students from both universities will work in the building which will house offices, a library and seminar and meeting rooms.
The design is an energy-efficient two-storey building to the west of Knights Gate Road which will fit in on the Sixties campus.
Lewes district councillors passed the proposals by a margin of seven to six in May last year.
Falmer residents widely criticised the scheme, fearing it would leave no buffer zone of green land between the university campus and their village.
