While heartily endorsing the comments of Christopher Hawtree and Peter Poole regarding the demolition of the Essoldo/Imperial in North Street, Brighton (Opinion, March 17), I note Brighton and Hove City Council indicated the shopping centre needed improvement. Some houses, too, were proposed for the site.

Pretty hopeless, that, isn't it, when you can drive neither up nor down North Street, buses and taxis excused of course.

Fancy losing a ready-made theatre. My generation's Brighton has long gone: The Regent dance hall, 22 cinemas, Sherry's dance hall, the West Pier (probably), the ice rink, a roller rink, walking in safety at night and corner shops.

What next, a car park in place of the Royal Pavilion? Even our houses were criminally demolished, rented or owned. Mine was no slum.
