Firefighters dashed through flames and thick smoke to rescue animals trapped after an arson attack.

The blaze at Langton Stables in Langton Lane, Hurstpierpoint, started at about 11pm yesterday.

Firefighters saved a pony and two German shepherd dogs but a number of animals died in the flames.

Firefighters had to disinfect their equipment on leaving the scene as a precaution against foot-and-mouth disease.

Police are investigating the fire and appealed for witnesses.
