A council has agreed a radical shake up in the way it conducts its business.

Wealden District Council is to abandon its traditional committee system for a new style of management based around a council leader and an executive Cabinet.

Councillors made the decision after seeing the results of a consultation process which involved more than 6,000 individuals and organisations across the district.

Most of those who expressed a preference said they would prefer a leader with an executive to a directly-elected mayor with a Cabinet or council manager.

Council leader Rupert Thornely-Taylor said: "There was a clear message from the public that they would prefer a system run by a leader and executive."

Wealden must submit proposals for re-organisation to Secretary of State John Prescott.
