Almost £1 million is being given to Sussex following the floods which devastated the county.

The cash is part of a £11.6 million cash aid package for the UK from the Government which was announced today.

Sussex will receive a £960,000 share after towns including Lewes and Uckfield were washed out. The cash will pay for the Environment Agency's response and repair costs after the worst floods in memory.

It will meet the exceptional costs of the emergency response mounted by the agency and the cost of immediate repairs to damaged flood defences.

Elliot Morley, the countryside and fisheries minister, said: "I am very pleased to announce the £11.6 million from the Government today which will reduce the costs of the flooding being passed on to council tax payers."
