Up to 140 jobs will be created when a chain store and training organisation open this year.

A total of 70 of the jobs will be at the Sussex Learning and Skills Council at Princes House in Queen's Road, Brighton.

The organisation, which from next year will run education and training for over 16 year olds in Sussex, has a workforce of 30 but plans to expand to 100 by the end of the summer.

Up to 70 more jobs will be created in Worthing when discount clothes store TK Maxx moves into the former C&A building in the Montague Centre.

Brighton and Hove councillor Ken Bodfish, who is a member of the learning council, said: "A significant proportion of the jobs will be highly-skilled posts for people who specialise in training.

"They will hopefully help create opportunities for other people to learn skills to help them gain employment."

The offices in Princes House have been empty since they were built more than five years ago.

Developers Hargreaves deliberately waited before letting out the space to secure a rent of £15 a square foot, which is one of the highest in the city.

Bill Smith, council business investment officer, said: "It is good news for the property market and for jobs."

TK Maxx, which has 80 other shops across Britain, including a branch in Brighton, is likely to open its new store by April.

Jobs will be both full and part-time, including sales, stock control and management positions.

A spokeswoman for TK Maxx, which is a subsidiary of US-based TJ Maxx, said: "Our research showed Worthing was a good place for us to be."
