Hastings and Bexhill have opened a four point gap at the top of Sussex One after a routine 25-3 home win over troubled Seaford.

But assistant coach Rob Hamilton admits the title race could come down to the away clash at Uckfield, who have two games in hand on the leaders and a superior points difference.

Hamilton felt H&B were below their best on Saturday but added: "We dominated the game without really firing on all cylinders.

"The feeling in the camp is pretty confident but we are aware we have only got two home games left and some hard away games to come.

"Hopefully it comes down to our game at Uckfield rather than one of us slipping up elsewhere."

Prop Steve Pepper scored the only first half try with Paul Sandeman converting to add to an earlier penalty.

Second half scores followed from Sandeman, Martin Sheppard and hooker Dave Sprinks, who was given a simple finish after outside half Mark Parmore had made a break and drawn the defence.

Simon Baker kicked a penalty for Seaford, who led the table early in the season but are now second from bottom.

Conditions at Hastings were good, but the frosty weather played a huge part elsewhere with just four matches in Sussex getting the go ahead.

Among those to be frustrated were London Two South leaders Haywards Heath, whose home game with Old Guildfordians was called off just before the scheduled kick-off.

Heath staged a training session on the Whitemans Green pitch, which had passed a 1pm inspection, but conceded the referee's decision was made with the players' safety in mind as temperatures dropped.

Sussex skipper Nick Killick has joined the coaching team looking to inspire the county under-20s to an improved effort this season.

The Haywards Heath hooker joins another former Harlequin in David Price as part of a three-man coaching team also including Paul Halsey.

Sussex take on a President's XV at Brighton on Sunday as a warm-up to their three-game Champ-ionship programme.

They open on February 4 with a tough-looking trip to Middlesex, whose big win in the corresponding tussle at Chichester a year ago set the tone for a disappointing campaign for the county.

Sussex go to Eastern Counties a fortnight later before tackling Hertford-shire at Waterhall on March 4.
