As the office of elected mayor will undoubtedly attract a salary of some £90,000-£100,000 a year, one wonders what he/she will do to justify such an expense.

Will we still retain the chief executive, again at an annual salary of some £90,000, plus a mayor who will wear the civic chain, ride in the mayoral car, open bazaars etc.

To run this cash-starved city requires great business acumen, yet none of the candidates so far mentioned - an ex-primary school teacher, a comedian and an ex-councillor who sat in dustbins - has the required experience.

Having said that, there is, of course, one councillor who could fill the post, namely Joyce Edmond-Smith, who is greatly respected in the town and did so brilliantly when she stood for the European Parliament. If only she could be persuaded to stand for this undemocratic office.
