Neighbours today told of their shock at the unexplained death of an 89-year-old woman.
Detectives are continuing their investigation into Elsie Cook's death but say they have ruled out the possibility of murder.
Miss Cook, who lived alone, was found in a chair in her kitchen on Monday by concerned relatives who had tried to contact her.
Police are waiting for the results of tests and a post-mortem examination.
Detective Superintendent Steve Scott, leading the investigation, said: "Whilst we are not treating this as a murder investigation, we are conducting full inquiries to establish how she died."
Miss Cook lived next door to the well-known Nicola Rodmell School of Dance. Neighbour Jon Pollock, 36, said: "She was a sweet old lady. She would often stop you in the street and talk to you about the weather and you would often see her pottering around in the garden.
"I last saw her on Friday morning as I was coming back from the shops and she seemed in a good mood. To hear that this has happened to her is a shock.
"We've put extra bolts on our doors just in case."
Another neighbour said: "She was such a friendly lady, always willing to chat even when she was in a hurry."
Police have appealed for anyone who saw Miss Cook in the last week to contact them.
Anyone who has information should call Hastings police on 0845 6070999.
