I was very interested to see yet another complaint about the binmen - or the lack of them.

We live in a small and somewhat secluded little road, called Tavistock on a much neglected rundown and mocked estate, with nothing for the young people to do, nowhere for the smaller ones to play and nothing as a working parent to be proud of.

Most of us are decent people who pay the gas, water, electric, phone and, most importantly, the community charge and rent.

Some people pay these bills in advance and what do they (we) get for our money? Service, collected rubbish, new kitchens, new bathrooms, new community centre, days out for children, local government schemes, cameras, new fences, clean streets and caretakers? No.

It feels as if we live in a rubbish dump.

I'm sorry, but that is the description of Tavistock, at least in the last two years. What is the point of paying bills and taxes and getting nothing in return?
