A former nurse appeared in court today accused of raping a woman at knifepoint.

Rashid Kausmally, 48, now unemployed, of Bear Road, Brighton, is alleged to have raped a 26-year-old woman in Queensbury Mews, Brighton, on December 20.

He is also charged with robbing the woman of a purse and mobile phone.

Kausmally, a father of one, is also charged with robbing a 20-year-old woman in Queens Road while armed with a knife on December 11; attempting to rob another woman of a Ford Escort in Hassocks on December 24; and taking a Vauxhall Corsa without the owner's consent on December 23.

He is further charged with assaulting a woman, causing her actual bodily harm, in Coombe Terrace in August.

Brighton magistrates refused Kausmally's application for bail and remanded him in custody. He will appear at Lewes Crown Court on January 25.
