There has been a long campaign to gain the status of city for the twinned towns of Brighton and Hove with the aim of increasing business and tourism.

The council, with the help of the bus companies and the blessing of government, has for a number of years pursued a course of action designed to create chaos on our roads and frustrate the journeys of businessmen and tourists trying to take advantage of the opportunities opened up by city status.

Our car parks are mostly in the city centre, forcing cars to drive through town to gain access.

Yet, to my limited knowledge, every proposal for a park and ride centre has been opposed by one party or the other or by minority objectors.

With one section of the council trying to encourage the growth of tourism and business and another doing its best to discourage the access needed should the other section succeed, we appear to have shot ourselves in the foot.

Don't these people talk to one another?

At some point we really have to re-consider proposals to drive cars out of the picture.

Even running at 100 per cent efficiency, the railways could not cope. There are no bus lanes on the motorways yet and most people are unable to ride a bicycle further than the chip shop.

We have to get out of this politically correct mode and do the best for Brighton and its people.
