A van driver lost his temper and punched another man in a road rage attack, a court heard.

Keith Newton became angry at another motorist's driving in Portland Road, Hove, in March.

He stopped his Ford Transit van, blocking the path of a Ford Fiesta, and when passenger Jason Brand got out to find out what was going on Newton punched him in the face.

Newton, 48, of Florence Avenue, Hove, denied common assault but was convicted by Brighton magistrates last month. The case was adjourned for sentence.

Newton was ordered to pay £100 compensation to his victim, who suffered bruising and swelling, plus £69 to cover lost earnings while he was receiving medical treatment.

He was sentenced to 240 hours' community service and ordered to pay £280 costs.

David Woodings, prosecuting, told the court Mr Brand was travelling in a car driven by his girlfriend at about 10pm when the van stopped suddenly in front of their vehicle.

Mr Brand said Newton started shouting and swearing at him about his girlfriend's driving. He hit Mr Brand before getting back into the van and driving off.

Helen Coward, defending, said Newton had denied the charge because he believed he had acted in self-defence after Mr Brand put his hand on Newton's shoulder.
