Mechanical failure has been ruled out as the cause of a head-on crash involving two buses in Brighton.

Ten people were injured when the single and double-decker collided near Victoria Gardens at the junction of Gloucester Place and North Road at about 7.30am on Monday.

All were treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and were later released.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Our investigation is continuing and we have still to interview the drivers, but it appears there was nothing wrong mechanically with the buses."

A trapped woman was rescued from the top deck by firefighters, who pulled her out through the back window.

The driver of the single-decker, who was trapped, was rescued through his offside window.

Other passengers escaped through the emergency doors. Witnesses said the single-deck Hollingbury-bound bus first hit pedestrian crossing lights, then collided with the oncoming 49A double-decker.

Police and the Brighton and Hove Bus Company declined to release the identities of the bus drivers.
