Following on from your story Tax Insult To Flood Victims (November 25) you have published several letters concerning the payment of council tax on caravans being used by flood victims, all of them taking Lewes District Council to task for imposing this tax.
Your coverage was fair and made the point the council has a statutory obligation, meaning 'by law', to charge this tax.
I and many of my fellow councillors are not in the least bit happy flood victims should be charged tax on their temporary homes and agree this adds insult to injury.
Could I therefore ask, instead of shooting the messenger (ie the council), people write to their local MPs, especially the Lewes MP, Norman Baker, to help him bring pressure to bear on the Government to either change this requirement or at least drop it temporarily in this time of emergency.
-Coun Roderick Wilson, Lewes District Council
