Residents have raised fears over plans to build 90 homes in an area hit by recent floods.

Folders Farm, off Folders Lane in Burgess Hill, is among a number of sites being considered by Mid Sussex District Council to meet its allocation of housing spots.

The scheme has already been steered through several committees and is awaiting approval by a planning inspector next year, before becoming part of a building-development plan for the whole of the district.

About 100 residents attended a public meeting and decided to lodge objections.

Nearby land flooded in recent storms and residents are concerned any problems will hit both them and any families who move into the proposed new homes.

Chairman of the meeting Roger Whaley said: "A number of residents raised the issue of flooding. The land is fairly low and has high water tables. The possibility of more problems being created is one of our objections."

Mid Sussex District Council member for the area, Michael Sullivan, said he believed any technical problems could be dealt with if a planning application came forward for approval.

He said: "What is likely to be the main relevant issue is whether it's actually suitable land for building on.

"We have had all this flooding in Mid Sussex and the rest of Sussex and it is known to be a bit boggy.

"Problems with sites can be sorted out with balancing ponds and all sorts of things.

"Any development like this has got to go through the full planning process. It could be years before anything is built."
