Seemingly unfazed by the King Alfred scandal, Ivor Caplin still insists (Argus, November 18) that a cinema be part of a sports centre. His desires are no reason that the site of something potentially fine should make way for those who guzzle popcorn in front of the mindless pap which is the mainstay of a multiplex.

If Hove needs a cinema, then there is one on Portland Road currently used for bingo. Let there be no more talk of a multiplex and leisure. It is perfectly possible for splendid sporting activities to fund themselves by various means: these would win the Council plaudits rather than the increasing obloquy which is making it the nation's laughing stock.
