Helicopter and lifeboat crews were called out to recover a man's body found floating in the sea.
Police were today trying to establish the dead man's identity.
The coastguard helicopter, lifeboats and police officers were called out after security staff at Brighton Pier spotted the body at 11.25pm yesterday.
The man's death is not being treated as suspicious.
He was in his early 20s, black, 5ft 7in tall and had a shaven head, slight stubble and crooked upper teeth.
He was wearing a hooded black padded jacket, black French Connection trousers and a checked red, brown and cream shirt.
Police believe he was from south London.
