A sports centre in Eastbourne has been named after BBC sports commentator Helen Rollason.

The centre, which forms part of the University of Brighton's Denton Road campus, was officially opened by BBC sports correspondent Neil Bennett.

Helen, who died of cancer in August 1999, was a University of Brighton student.

The opening coincided with a 24-hour sponsored swim for Children in Need.

The sports centre comprises the three gymnasia and dance studio that were the previous base for the Chelsea School.

To these have been added the refurbished swimming pool, synthetic turf training pitch, sports hall with national standard basketball and volleyball courts, county standard badminton and new fitness facilities.

Jerry Fairclough, director of sport and recreation at the University of Brighton, said, "At long last there are facilities of the quality to match the national reputation the University Chelsea School has for training in sport-related courses."
