Campaigners bidding to save services at their hospital have one more week to make their views heard.

A public consultation into a shake-up of facilities at Littlehampton Hospital and Zachary Merton Hospital, in Rustington, ends on Sunday.

West Sussex Health Authority wants to move inpatient services from Littlehampton to Rustington and redevelop Littlehampton to provide outpatient health and social services facilities only.

The redevelopment would increase the number of beds at Zachary Merton to 60 and it will become a centre of excellence for the area. There are currently 44 beds divided between both hospitals.

Campaigners say inpatient services should be kept at Littlehampton because it is a larger town and likely to expand in the future.

They accuse the health authority of having a hidden agenda to eventually close Littlehampton and consolidate all the facilities on one site in Rustington.

But health chiefs are denying this, saying the proposed changes will lead to an improved service for patients in both towns.

But residents in Littlehampton say they will fight the changes.

Campaigner Michael Edwards said: "There has been a hospital in Littlehampton for years and we deserve to have the full services that a growing population needs.

"The vast majority of people here want the beds to stay as this is where there is more demand for them but it seems they are being ignored. We do not believe enough has been done to look at alternative sites within Littlehampton.

"We are urging people to fight this and get their views known."

The health authority board will discuss the results of the public consultation during the next three months.
