Flames swept up a chimney after a fire broke out in a fish and chip shop.

Firefighters managed to contain the blaze in the flue which runs up through the building at R&D's fish and chips in The Broadway, Manorhall Road, Southwick, Brighton.

The fire broke out in the extractor fan at 11.44am, Saturday.

Owner Roger King said smoke had damaged the lounge and the loft of his flat above the shop but the fire crew put out the flames before the fire spread.

"We heard a roar and then I saw a gap in the extactor tube and then flames.

"The fire brigade were impeccable, they even started cleaning up after them, they were brilliant."

Mr King said the shop will be closed while the fan is replaced and damaged repaired but he hopes to be open again in about two weeks.
