Burgess Hill clinched the signature of striker Tim Marshall to cap a good night for the club at Leylands Park.

The Shoreham frontman signed just a matter of minutes after the Hillians saw off Abingdon United 2-1 in their FA Vase second round replay and booked a trip to Arlesey.

The reason why Hillians manager Gary Croydon wants Marshall on board was partly demonstrated last night against the determined visitors from the Hellenic League.

Croydon's side created the majority of the chances but failed to finish off their hosts and almost paid the price in injury time when United's Adam Cann powered a header against the upright.

After making the early running, the Hillians went ahead on 26 minutes when Des Guile, pushed into a forward role alongside the ever-dangerous Ashley Carr, rifled home a beautifully struck left-foot effort.

Matt Ash snatched at an even better chance within three minutes but then the hosts were caught cold as an unmarked Nigel Swafford beat the advancing Keith Cheal to make it 1-1. Hill then lost keeper Cheal with a cut head to be replaced by the hero of the first tie, teenager Darren Lehkyj.

Four minutes after the break Scott Langridge headed in Ash's corner for what proved to be the winner.

Croydon said: "We're a bit under-strength at the moment but we got a result and that is what is important."
