David Handley, the chairman of the so-called People's Fuel Lobby, seems to imply farmers are paying the same amount for their diesel as everyone else. This is not the case, as 80 per cent of the fuel used in agriculture is red diesel, which costs under half the price of normal fuel.

He also talks of many farmers losing their livelihood because of the price of fuel. The real culprits, however, are the large oil companies and big supermarkets, who could pay a decent amount to the farmers and still make profits for their shareholders.

When it comes to road transport, instead of encouraging heavy goods back onto the railways by improving the rail system, the last Conservative government decided to give way to the powerful road transport lobby and deregulate road transport.

This means we now have a 40 per cent increase in trucks on our roads with the subsequent dangers to health and the environment.
