Albion boss Micky Adams wants his players to "go for it" in the FA Cup.

He is challenging the Seagulls to claim a place alongside the big guns of the Premiership for the first time in eight seasons.

Albion have not made it through to the third round, when the top teams enter the draw, since 1992-93.

Another early exit in Saturday's banana skin tie at non-League Aldershot would allow them to concentrate on the priority of winning promotion.

But Adams bristled at the suggestion, declaring: "Of course we are looking for a cup run. We are on an unbeaten run and we want to continue it.

"We will be approaching it like we do League games. A cup run is good for confidence and good for the supporters. They've not had a decent run for a while, so let's go for it.

"We did reasonably well last year by playing four games in the competition, which is probably three more than normal. I would like to see us in the third round this time."

Adams' first taste of the FA Cup with Albion last season, when they went out to Plymouth in a second round replay at Withdean, was an improvement on a dreadful recent record for the 1983 finalists.

They were knocked out in the first round in five of the previous six years, including a trio of embarrassing exits against non-League sides Hereford, Sudbury and Kingstonian.

The bid by high-riding Ryman Leaguers Aldershot to add to that humiliating sequence features on the BBC's Match of the Day on Saturday night, so Albion will pocket an additional £18,750.

"The money is a bonus for the club, but the TV cameras only go to places where they think their might be a shock," Adams warned. "That is what we are guarding against."

Albion face Brentford in the FA Youth Cup at Bognor tonight (7.30).
