A man has appeared in court charged with murdering Worthing pensioner Jean Barnes after stealing antiques from her home.

David Munley pleaded not guilty to the offence at Lewes Crown Court today.

Munley, 56, of Byron Road, Worthing, is accused of committing the murder between July 1 and 27 last year.

He is also accused of nine counts of burglary, committed on or before September 24 1998 and July 16 1999, all at Tennyson Road, Worthing.

He is also alleged to have stolen paintings, furniture, a clock and vases all belonging to Miss Barnes, of Tennyson Road.

Munley, who wore a grey suit and an open-necked shirt, is also charged with five counts of forgery, alleged to have been committed on or about April 28 1999 and July 23 1999.

The trial, which is expected to last four weeks, was adjourned until 10.15am tomorrow.
