Sussex assistant manager Dave John got one over on the county boss John Suter as his Hassocks side beat Horsham YMCA 2-1 at the Beacon.

In midweek, Suter and John shared the same dugout as Sussex began their defence of the South West Counties Championship title with a 3-1 win over Hampshire.

On Saturday, John's rocking Robins edged out Suter's in-form side though both managers agreed that a draw would have probably been a fair result.

John said: "It was a cracking game but they probably deserved a draw."

Suter said: "I feel disappointed that we have gone away with nothing but we were not clinical enough around their penalty area."

Another matter that both bosses agreed on was the quality of James Laing's opening goal on 29 minutes as he caught the advancing keeper with a 35-yard chip.

Mark Francis equalised for YMCA from the rebound after Paul John had saved Nick Flint's penalty on 35 minutes.

However, the Robins took the spoils when Phil Eldret continued his rich vein of form with the winner on 65 minutes.

Secured East Preston are off the bottom after Chris Jack's header from a fine Terry Withers cross clinched a 1-0 derby win at Littlehampton.

Burgess Hill were down to ten men when a goal from Ashley Carr secured them a point against visitors Wick.

Carr's free-kick with four minutes remaining cancelled out Justin Thorpe's 13th-minute effort. The Hillians had earlier lost defender Scott Langridge for a foul. Burgess Hill manager Gary Croydon said: "I thought it was a harsh sending off."

Germain Amanuel scored twice in Redhill's 3-2 home win over Eastbourne Town but boss Russell Mason admitted: "It was not a good performance.

"We have had eight days without playing or training and it showed."

Nigel Brotherton and Richard Piper scored equalisers for Town but they were sunk by a drilled cross from James Horner which deflected in off a defender.

Eastbourne United manager Micky French's latest signing Tobi Hutchinson marked his debut with a goal in the 2-1 victory at Chichester City United.

Ian Dickens supplied the cross from which Hutchinson buried a bullet header on 11 minutes while a great volley from centre half Darren Smith made it 2-0 within two minutes.

Chichester had a player sent for foul and abusive language soon after but Eastbourne then lost goalscorer Smith for a professional foul.

A penalty by Paul Thomas reduced arrears.

Whitehawk lost a two-goal lead at Sidley United following Mark Sheriff's early bath.

Sheriff was sent off for two bookable offences, encroaching at a free kick and diving. Manager Paul Hubbard said: "We hadn't had a player sent off for four years and now we have had two sent off in two weeks."

Hawks keeper Ross Standen kept out everything until the final ten minutes when Gerard Moyse struck twice.

Gareth Hughes had put Hawks into a 2-0 lead with goals on 51 and 55 minutes.
