Responsible employers do try to ensure safety measures in the building industry are enforced (Argus, August 1). These measures are government laws.

Trying to enforce safe working

measures is equal to the police trying to enforce statutory speed limits. It is only when police presence is obvious that motorists observe the speed limit.

Likewise, when the employer or his representative turns his back, the worker will take a risk. This is when fatal and serious accidents occur.

Fines are generally "low" because the "blame" for accidents is apportioned mostly towards the injured worker.

Every individual is responsible for his own actions. Keep to the working and safe speed limit.
