It is not much use spending vast sums of public money on buses unless there is a programme of recruitment and training for the necessary drivers to guarantee vehicles will be efficiently run and maintained.

There are not enough drivers, which is why so much unreliability has been experienced by the public this year. The poor performance of some drivers spoils the reputations of very good ones.

For example, not pulling properly into the layby makes life difficult for the elderly, causing a much deeper step down when laden with shopping, instead of on to the kerb.
